Prague became an important city in the 12th century. In 1257 the city received civil rights from Ottokar II and another part of Prague was founded " Mala Strana ". Thousand of workers and merchants came to the city during the governance of the Emperor Charles IV. Prague became an emperor's residence and the Emperor wanted to make Prague the capital of the holy Roman Empire. Very soon the city became too small and in 1348 the New City was founded, an area between Vysehrad, Poric and the Old City. The whole area soon was plenty of houses, market squares, beautiful churches and monasteries. Prague became equal to other beautiful cities like Rome, Paris ,Firenze...At the end of the 19th century , Prague was industrialised and the number of factories, railways,..increaded fast. At the end of WWI the Czech Republic was founded officially and Slovakia was added. Prague became the capital of Czechoslovakia. In 1922 some other city parts like Vinohrady were added to Prague. Different nationalities like Czech , Germans, Jews lived next to each other and due to this the city received its cultural richness. historical buildings like the National Theatre , the Saint Ludmilla church at Namesti Miru or the Basilica at Vysehrad were replaced by Art Nouveau style during the end of the century ( main city hall , central railway station , Petrin hill..) During WWI nothing new was built for 10 years. During 1920-1930 the architecture was enriched by functionalism. During that period the cathedral of Saint Vit was finished. Unique in the world is also the cubist architecture.

Due to the rising nazism , the first inhabitants left Prague during the 1930's. During the war all Jews , Roma gypsies and other people of inferior race were sent to the concentration camps. Executions and captivities took place regulary. There was a Gestapo office in the Petschek Palace and a firing squad in Kobylisy. During the war not so much was destroyed in Prague , only due to the american bombings at the end of the war. On the 5th of May 1945 the Revolution took place and the americanArmy was stopped in Pilsen , while the red Army occupied prague on the 9th of May.

Prague is a valuable tresure of Europe and of the world. The historical and cultural value of the city attracts millions of tourists from the whole world.
